Oat Milk & Rapeseed Oil, What’s it All About?
Oat milk has fast become the UK’s most popular dairy alternative and for good reason. It’s got great eco credentials, it’s super versatile and tastes pretty damn delicious. It also has some great health benefits too, but you may have wondered how oat milk manages to achieve such a high degree of creaminess which let’s be honest is almost comparable to that of full fat dairy milk, and the answer is oil. Specifically, rapeseed oil. Check the ingredients of almost any oat milk you buy and you’ll see rapeseed oil as the 2nd ingredient after oats, and in some instances it can be added in large quantities.

What is rapeseed oil?
Rapeseed oil is derived from the colourful rapeseed crop and is commonly used because of its relatively low cost and saturated fat content. However, saturated fat is not the whole picture. Rapeseed oil contains a high concentration of omega-6 fatty acids, which, if consumed excessively, can kickstart inflammation in our bodies which subsequently can lead to heart diseases, obesity, and a host of other chronic issues. Now we aren’t saying that rapeseed oil is the worst thing in the world, but you can do better.
In particular, beware of brands which use highly processed rapeseed oils, as high temperatures during refining can give birth to trans fats turning our oat milk dream into a nightmare. This poses additional health risks.
Is there an alternative to rapeseed oil?
Yes! Some oat milk brands don’t use any oils although these are few and far between, and you may lose out on the creaminess of your oat milk.
