Frothy Plant-based Iced Coffee Recipe

We didn't invent iced coffee. We didn't invent whipped coffee either. But we did spend an unreasonable amount of time making sure this version tastes like it came straight from a specialty coffee shop. Five minutes, one frother, and you'll never pay £7 for one again.

Ingredients

1 tsp instant coffee 1 tbsp sugar (brown sugar works well) 2 tbsp hot water 250 - 300ml Overherd oat milk Ice cubes Pinch of cinnamon (optional, for topping)

Method

1 In a small jar or bowl, combine the instant coffee, sugar, and hot water.
2 Whip the mixture using a milk frother until it becomes light, frothy, and silky.
3 Fill a glass with ice, then pour in 250 - 300ml of Overherd oat milk.
4 Gently spoon the whipped coffee mixture over the top.
5 Sprinkle with a pinch of cinnamon if using, and serve immediately.
Why Overherd works here Carton oat milk is around 90% water. This means it can taste thin and watery under a bold whipped coffee. Overherd powder lets you mix to the exact concentration you want, so the oat milk holds its own against the coffee rather than getting lost in it. Mix it slightly richer than usual for the best result.

Tips

Froth it properly The whipped coffee needs at least 60 seconds with the frother to reach the right consistency. It should be pale, thick, and hold its shape when spooned.
Mix Overherd slightly richer For this recipe, try 30g of Overherd powder per 250ml water instead of the standard ratio. It holds up better against the bold coffee flavour.
Use brown sugar Brown sugar adds a subtle caramel note to the whipped coffee that white sugar doesn't. A small difference but worth it.

FAQ

Can you make frothy iced coffee with oat milk powder? Yes and it works better than carton oat milk for this recipe. Overherd powder lets you mix the oat milk to a richer concentration, so it has enough body to complement the whipped coffee rather than tasting watery underneath it.
Do you need a frother to make this plant-based iced coffee recipe? A handheld electric frother is the easiest option and costs very little. If you don't have one, you can whisk by hand in a small bowl. It takes a couple of minutes longer but works. A small blender or jar with a tight-fitting lid shaken vigorously also does the job.
What is whipped iced coffee inspired by? It's based on the dalgona coffee trend. This is the same but served over ice instead of hot milk.

Serving suggestions

01 Classic with cinnamon A pinch of cinnamon on top is all it needs. Simple, looks great, adds a subtle warmth to the flavour.
02 With a pastry Pairs well with a croissant, almond danish, or anything buttery. A proper coffee shop moment at home.
03 Post-workout The combination of caffeine and oat milk makes this a solid post-workout drink. Mix the Overherd slightly richer for extra protein.
04 Afternoon pick-me-up Better than a second cup of hot coffee. Takes five minutes and feels like more of a treat.
05 With cocoa powder on top Dust with cocoa powder instead of cinnamon for a mocha-adjacent finish.

Variations

Espresso martini iced coffee Add a shot of Tia Maria (or other cold-brew coffee liquer) to your Overherd oat milk before pouring over ice. Top with the whipped coffee as usual, but go easy on the sugar. It's technically a cocktail at this point, but we're not judging.
Matcha cloud Swap the whipped coffee layer for whipped matcha – 1 tsp matcha, 1 tbsp sugar, 2 tbsp hot water, frothed the same way. Pour over Overherd oat milk and ice for an earthy sweet treat and caffeine without the jitters.
Brown butter simple syrup Make a quick simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water, heated) and stir in a small knob of plant-based butter until lightly browned. Use this instead of plain sugar in the whipped layer for a nutty, richer taste.
Dirty chai iced coffee Brew a strong chai (bag or loose leaf), let it cool, then use it in place of the hot water when making your whipped coffee. It's a little spiced, a tad sweet, and very moreish!
