Iced Thai Tea Recipe with Oat Milk

Ever wondered why Buddhists live so long? Well, now you know. This plant-based iced Thai tea is made with Overherd oat milk powder and our dairy-free condensed milk recipe. Tea steeped into both the ice cubes and the milk itself, so the flavour stays strong all the way to the bottom of the glass.

Serves1

Ingredients

For the tea ice cubes 2 tbsp Thai tea mix 280ml boiling water For the milk mixture 1 tbsp Thai tea mix 25g Overherd oat milk powder 250ml hot water 30g Overherd condensed milk (or agave syrup)

Method

Make the tea ice cubes
1 Add the Thai tea mix to the boiling water and leave to steep and cool to room temperature.
2 Strain out the leaves and pour the tea into ice cube trays. Freeze overnight.
Make the milk mixture and serve
3 Steep 1 tbsp Thai tea mix in the 250ml hot water for 5 minutes, then strain out the leaves.
4 Mix the Overherd powder and condensed milk into the strained tea until fully combined. Leave to cool to room temperature.
5 Fill a glass with the frozen Thai tea ice cubes and pour the milk mixture over the top.
Why Overherd works here Carton oat milk poured straight over ice can taste thin by the time the cubes start melting. Overherd powder lets you mix the oat milk to the exact concentration you want, so it holds up against the strong tea rather than getting lost in it.

Tips

Make the ice cubes ahead The tea needs to freeze overnight, so make a batch in advance and keep them in a freezer bag. Ready whenever you want an iced Thai tea with no waiting.
Tea goes in twice Steeping tea into both the ice cubes and the milk mixture is what keeps the flavour strong throughout. Relying on melting ice cubes alone might give a weak, watered-down result.
Make a batch of condensed milk Make a full batch of our condensed milk recipe in advance. It keeps in the fridge for up to 7 days, so you've always got some ready for this.

FAQ

Can you make Thai iced tea with oat milk powder? Yes, and it works better than carton oat milk for this. Overherd powder lets you mix the oat milk to a richer concentration, so it holds its own against the strong tea and ice rather than tasting diluted.
Where can I find Thai tea mix? Thai tea mix (sometimes labelled "Cha Thai") is available at most Asian grocery stores and online. It's a blend of black tea, spices, and food colouring that gives the drink its distinctive orange colour and flavour.
Can I use agave syrup instead of condensed milk? Yes, agave syrup works as a simpler substitute if you don't want to make the condensed milk from scratch. The flavour will be slightly less rich, but it's a quick option if you're short on time.

Serving suggestions

01 Classic over ice The recipe above. Strong, sweet, and properly cold from start to finish thanks to the tea-flavoured ice cubes.
02 With Thai or Vietnamese food A natural pairing for spicy, aromatic dishes. The sweetness and creaminess balance the heat well.
03 Afternoon cooler A genuine alternative to a second coffee. Caffeinated, but in a different, more refreshing direction.

Variations

Stronger tea Increase the Thai tea mix to 3 tbsp for a bolder, more intense flavour. Particularly good if your ice cubes melt quickly.
Extra creamy Increase the Overherd powder to 35g for a richer, more indulgent milk mixture that holds up even longer over ice.
Less sweet Reduce the condensed milk to 20g if you prefer a less sweet result. The tea flavour comes through more clearly without the extra sugar.
Hot Thai tea Skip the freezing step and serve the tea hot with the milk mixture stirred straight in. A completely different but equally good drink.
